One District One Product

Meaning

One District One Product (ODOP) is a scheme that picks one special local product for each district. Uttar Pradesh started it in 2018, and it was later taken to the whole country. The chosen product gets help with branding (building a known name), credit (loans) and exports. The aim is to support local skills and crafts that the district is already known for. ODOP is linked to GI tags. A GI tag (Geographical Indication) is a label that shows a product truly comes from a particular place.

Example

In Uttar Pradesh, Moradabad was given brassware, Kannauj perfume (attar) and Varanasi (Banaras) silk. Each of these places has been famous for its product for a long time.

Don't confuse with

  • Product-specialised industrial towns: these are towns that came to specialise in one product over time, on their own. ODOP is a government scheme that picks such products and supports them.
