Surat diamond industry

Geography glossary

Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Surat, a city in Gujarat, cuts and polishes most of the world's diamonds. Rough diamonds come in from abroad. Skilled workers in Surat shape and polish them, and the stones are then sent back out to world markets. These skills spread through the Palanpuri Jain and Kathiawadi communities, who brought the trade and the workers together. The industry shows how skill and community networks, not local raw material, can make a town a world leader. It is a major source of export earnings and jobs.

Example

The Surat Diamond Bourse opened in 2023 in Surat, Gujarat. It is a trading centre for diamonds and is among the largest office buildings in the world.

Don't confuse with

  • Diamond mining: Surat has no diamond mines. Its industry is about cutting and polishing stones that are brought in. It does not dig them out of the ground.
