Meaning

The Visakhapatnam-Guntur industrial region lies in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Its growth rests on the port at Visakhapatnam, which brings in raw materials and sends goods out. The region has shipbuilding, a large steel plant, an oil refinery and fertiliser plants. Natural gas from the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin, an oil and gas area off the Andhra coast, also supports industry there. It is a good example of an industrial region based on a port.

Example

The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) steel plant at Visakhapatnam is India's first shore-based steel plant. It uses coking coal brought in by sea. Hindustan Shipyard in the same city builds ships.

Don't confuse with

  • Chota Nagpur industrial region: its steel plants sit inland, near iron ore and coal mines in Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. The Visakhapatnam steel plant sits on the coast and depends on imported coal.
